Can soldering be self-taught?

Yes. Soldering is a hands-on manual skill with a low barrier to entry — there's no licensing or certification needed for hobby electronics work, and the core technique (heat the joint, feed solder to the joint, not the iron) can be learned from a written guide or video and a few practice joints on scrap wire or an old circuit board.
Most people get a passable joint within their first half hour and a genuinely good, shiny, cone-shaped joint within a few sessions once they stop making the two most common beginner mistakes: melting solder directly onto the iron tip instead of the joint, and not heating the joint for long enough before introducing solder. Neither takes special equipment to fix, just a bit of deliberate practice.
Start with our beginner's guide, which walks through tinning the tip, heating the joint properly, and telling a good joint from a cold one. For the iron itself, see what's the best soldering iron for a beginner's kit.
