Can I use a soldering iron for stained glass work?

Last verified 2026-08-09

Yes, but stained glass soldering has different requirements from electronics: it typically needs a higher-wattage iron (80W and up) with a wide, flat-faced tip designed to run a bead of solder along a copper-foiled seam, rather than a fine point for small joints. A general-purpose electronics iron or station in this comparison isn't the right tool for stained glass — look for irons specifically marketed for stained glass/craft soldering, which prioritise a different tip shape and sustained higher wattage over precision control.
