Can I use a paperclip to solder?

Last verified 9 August 2026

A paperclip isn't a substitute for a soldering iron — it has no heating element, so on its own it can't melt solder at all. What people usually mean by this question is using a paperclip as an improvised tool alongside a proper iron: bent into a small hook or pick to hold a wire in place, clear a solder bridge, or act as a makeshift "third hand" while both your hands are occupied with the iron and solder.

Used that way it's a genuine, if crude, workaround — plenty of hobbyists keep a bent paperclip in the toolbox for exactly this. It doesn't replace dedicated helping-hands clamps or a proper soldering iron, and steel paperclips don't solder well themselves if you're trying to join the clip to something (see which metal cannot be soldered for why some steels are difficult).
